Born in Johnston District, Upper Canada, son of Erastus Nathaniel Hinckley and Lois Judd. Journal includes description of his occupational pursuits; record of meetings and conferences attended in Salt Lake Valley; call to guard mail stations in Eastern Wyoming and Nebraska; return to Salt Lake Valley. Letter includes explantion of his call to build Cove Fort, and his success in fulfilling the assignment, a description of the fort, its measurements, and the materials used in its service.
